St. Mary's Assumption
Built in 1860 by the German Catholics, this is a more baroque and grand church than its Irish neighbor across the street, complete with dozens of life-size saints statues, and the beneficiary of a major restoration project. The two churches make an interesting contrast to each other. The hero of the yellow fever epidemic of 1867, Fr. Francis Xavier Seelos, is buried in the church. Credited with the working of many miracles, he will be beatified in 2000--and to say this is a big deal is to make an understatement, if you visit the church, you're likely to see letters of petition on his tomb. Still more "Witching Hour" action takes place here, including Rowan and Michael's wedding. The church is only open during Mass; call the office for times.
